Bedroom Furniture Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Set for Your Home

How to Buy Bedroom Furniture That You Won't Regret

Bedroom furniture is one of the highest-stakes purchases you'll make for your home. Unlike a decorative accessory you can swap out easily, a bedroom set tends to stay for years. Getting the size, style, and storage right from the start saves significant time and money.

This guide walks you through the key decisions — from measuring your room to choosing the right finish.

Step 1: Measure Everything Before You Browse

This sounds obvious, but it's where most people go wrong. Before you look at a single product, take these measurements:

  • Room dimensions (length x width)
  • Ceiling height — relevant if you're considering tall wardrobes
  • Door and window positions, and how far they swing open
  • Any alcoves, radiators, or awkward angles

As a general rule, you want at least 70–90cm clearance around the bed for comfortable movement. In smaller rooms, this often means compromising on bed size — a 135cm double rather than a 150cm king, for example.

Step 2: Decide on Your Storage Needs

This is the most practical decision and should drive everything else. Ask yourself:

  • Do you need a wardrobe for hanging clothes, shelves, or both?
  • How many drawers do you need for folded clothes and accessories?
  • Would under-bed storage (a divan base or ottoman bed) help?
  • Do you need a dressing table or chest of drawers separately?

A coordinated bedroom set — where the bed frame, wardrobe, chest of drawers, and bedside tables all match — is usually the most cost-effective and visually coherent approach.

Step 3: Choose a Style That Works Long-Term

Bedroom trends come and go, but you'll live with this furniture daily. Our advice is to prioritise styles with staying power:

Classic and traditional styles with warm wood tones or painted finishes age gracefully and work with a wide range of bedding and accessories.

Contemporary styles with clean lines and neutral finishes (white, grey, walnut effect) suit modern homes and are easy to accessorise.

Avoid highly fashion-forward pieces unless you genuinely love them — statement headboards and bold colours can feel dated quickly.

Step 4: Check Lead Times Before You Commit

Bedroom sets — particularly larger wardrobes — often need to be ordered in advance. Many of our bedroom sets are made to order, with lead times of 4–8 weeks. If you're moving home or renovating, factor this into your timeline early.

Step 5: Consider Assembly and Delivery

Large bedroom furniture, especially multi-door wardrobes, can be challenging to assemble. At Ider Furniture, we offer free delivery and full assembly within 55 miles of our stores — so you don't have to worry about it.
