Simple Habits That Keep Your Sofa Looking New for Longer
A quality fabric sofa is a significant investment — and with the right care, it should last 10–15 years or more. The good news is that keeping it in excellent condition doesn't require much effort. A few simple habits make all the difference.
Weekly Maintenance
Vacuum your sofa weekly using an upholstery attachment. This removes dust, crumbs, and the fine particles that work their way into fabric fibres over time and cause gradual wear. Pay particular attention to the seams, crevices, and underneath cushions.
Rotate and flip your cushions regularly — especially on high-use seats. This distributes wear evenly and prevents one area from compressing faster than others.
Dealing With Spills Immediately
Speed is everything with spills. The longer liquid sits in fabric, the harder it becomes to remove.
- Blot, don't rub. Use a clean white cloth and gently blot from the outside of the spill inward. Rubbing spreads the stain and drives it deeper into the fibres.
- Use cold water first. For most spills, cold water on a cloth is the safest starting point. Hot water can set protein-based stains (food, blood).
- Check your care label. Most sofas have a cleaning code on a label under a cushion: W (water-based cleaner), S (solvent-based only), WS (either), or X (vacuum only).
Fabric-Specific Advice
Velvet sofas: Brush regularly with a soft-bristle brush in the direction of the pile. Avoid pressing hard on spills — blot very gently. Steam can help lift crushed velvet pile.
Linen and cotton: These are more susceptible to water marks. Test any cleaning product on a hidden area first. Professional cleaning is recommended for significant stains.
Treated/easy-clean fabrics: Many of our sofas use high-performance treated fabrics that resist staining. These can be wiped with a lightly damp cloth for everyday marks.
Protecting Your Sofa
- Keep sofas away from direct sunlight where possible — UV exposure fades fabric over time.
- Apply a fabric protector spray every 6–12 months (make sure it's compatible with your specific fabric).
- Use throws on high-traffic spots — they're easy to wash and protect the upholstery underneath.
When to Call a Professional
For large stains, set-in marks, or a general deep clean, a professional upholstery cleaner is well worth the cost. Look for someone who uses a hot water extraction (steam cleaning) method — it's the most effective for fabric sofas without leaving residue.
