Why Corner Sofas Are the UK's Most Popular Sofa Style
Corner sofas have become the go-to choice for UK homeowners — and it's easy to see why. They maximise seating in any room, create a natural focal point, and make open-plan living spaces feel defined and cosy. But with so many options available, choosing the right one takes a little planning.
This guide covers everything you need to know before buying a corner sofa in the UK.
Left-Hand vs Right-Hand Corner Sofas: What's the Difference?
This is the first question most people get wrong. When we talk about left-hand or right-hand corner sofas, the orientation is always described as you face the sofa.
- Left-hand corner (LHF): The longer chaise section extends to your left as you look at it
- Right-hand corner (RHF): The chaise extends to your right
Before you order, stand in your room and decide which wall the longer section should run along. Getting this wrong is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes buyers make.
Sizes: What Will Fit Your Room?
Corner sofas vary significantly in size. As a general guide:
- Small corners: Typically around 220–240cm on the longer side. Suitable for rooms from about 3.5m x 3.5m.
- Medium corners: Around 270–300cm. The most popular size for UK living rooms.
- Large corners: 320cm and above. Ideal for open-plan spaces or larger family rooms.
Always measure your room before browsing. Mark the sofa footprint on the floor with masking tape — it gives you a far better sense of how the piece will sit in the space than any showroom visit alone.
Fabric or Leather? Choosing the Right Upholstery
Both have their advantages depending on your lifestyle:
Fabric corner sofas are warmer to the touch, come in a much wider range of colours and textures, and are generally better suited to homes with young children or pets. Treated fabrics offer strong stain resistance.
Leather corner sofas are easy to wipe clean, age beautifully, and have a timeless premium look. They can feel cooler in winter but are exceptionally durable.
At Ider Furniture, all our corner sofas are available in a wide range of fabrics and can be customised to your preferred colour — so you're never limited to what's on the showroom floor.
Corner Sofas with Sofa Beds: A Smart Choice
Many of our corner sofas are available with an integrated sofa bed mechanism, making them ideal for guest rooms or compact homes where a separate spare room isn't an option. The pull-out bed sits discreetly within the chaise section and converts in seconds.
What to Check Before You Buy
- Measure your doorways and hallways — corner sofas are large, and delivery access is often the issue people forget to check.
- Check the lead time — bespoke and custom-order sofas typically take 4–8 weeks from order to delivery.
- Ask about the frame — solid hardwood frames significantly outlast cheaper alternatives. Our sofas use kiln-dried hardwood frames with a 5-year warranty.
- Sit in it — if you can visit a showroom, do. Seat depth and cushion firmness vary considerably between styles.
